TF220064 - Team Foundation Server 2008 - Reporting Service Permissions

I decided to be one of those early installers that brave the RTM and hope everything has been programed correctly, so my current system doesn’t get blown away in the upgrade process. I have a small in home Team Foundation Server that I use for my home based business and personal coding. So an upgrade is pretty risky, in that I risk loosing everything. Knowing all the risks I decided to move forward and everything was going smoothly with installing Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server, until I ran in to the follow problem. ...

Visual Studio 2008 and .NET 3.5 Released

Scott Guthrie has announced that Visual Studio 2008 and .NET 3.5 are now available for download and provides a tour of some of the new features. If you are a MSDN subscriber, you can download your copy from the MSDN subscription site (note: some of the builds are just finishing being uploaded now - so check back later during the day if you don’t see it yet). If you are a non-MSDN subscriber, you can download a 90-day free trial edition of Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite here. A 90-day trial edition of Visual Studio 2008 Professional (which will be a slightly smaller download) will be available next week. A 90-day free trial edition of Team Foundation Server can also be downloaded here. If you want to use the free Visual Studio 2008 Express editions (which are much smaller and totally free), you can download them here. If you want to just install the .NET Framework 3.5 runtime, you can download it here.

I Made It To Times Square

A couple of weeks ago I posed about the Anything For Sale By Owner Website that I lead the development effort in. Well coming this Thursday (2007-10-25) we are going to be having a huge event in Times Square launching the website. Come out and join in, we are going to be giving away T-Shirts, doing interviews of what you would do with an extra dollar in your pocket, and a bunch of other events through out the day. I have included the Times Square ad that will be running on the Reuters building.

How to resolve relative url's without ResolveUrl

Sometimes you need to resolve relative url’s without ResolveUrl. If the code is executing outside a Control, for example in an IHttpHandler or business layer code somewhere that has no reference to a Control, you can’t call Control.ResolveUrl. The System.Web.VirtualPathUtility class has some very useful method for converting from an app relative path to an absolute path: string absoluteUrl = VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute(relativeUrl);

Running Ubuntu Linux 7.04 On HP NC8430

I have to preface this with I did not write the following it is just a mirror of http://fp.ath.cx/nc8430-linux-howto.html, but I found it so useful that I needed to post running the hp nc8430 under linux using ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn) hp nc8430 The hp nc8430 is a powerful notebook for the business user with a lot of hardware and gadgets. This guide aims to help users who want to run Linux on this hardware while achieving feature-parity with a comparable setup of competing operating systems. The guide does not only cover the several hardware-components, but also tackels the typical software-functionality an average business-user might need. Additional input welcome at [airflow.2007@gmail.com](mailto:airflow.2007@gmail.com). contents initial install enabling 3d-desktop functionality (with xgl and compiz) wireless lan (802.11b/g) supporting wpa2 enterprise security using 802.1x (peap using ms-chapv2) cisco (compatible) client vpn umts/gprs pcmcia datacard enable laptop mode (for power saving) replacement for microsoft outlook migrating mails from microsoft outlook to evolution signing and encrypting mails using evolution terminal server sessions (rdp, citrix, vnc) creating custom keyboard shortcuts in gnome alternative method of accessing network-shares: fusesmb cosmetic stuff hardware caveats initial install The installation of Linux on this laptop was my first experience with Ubuntu. I used the newest version available, which is 7.04. Just go to http://www.ubuntu.net/, download the ISO and burn it. Important: After choosing the “Desktop Edition”, be sure to checkbox to indicate you want the alternate desktop CD. The reason for that is a bug which exists in the installer, which prevents the right drivers for the ATI-graphics-adapter from being loaded. With the alternate image you’ll install using a text-mode installer, and afterwards you’ll have to install the necessary drivers by using the instructions below. ...

EMC (VMware Parent) Buys Mozy Online Backup

As many of you many remember I have highly recommended Mozy in the past. I just got notice from Jeff of Windows Connected that EMC has recently just acquired Mozy. I am a big fan of both VMware and Mozy and it is nice to see my world getting smaller. As some of you know I recently made a career move to EMC - specifically EMC Global Services, Microsoft Practice. Every once in a while I’ll get an EMC press release in my Inbox about a company we’ve acquired, or some other important ‘public-facing’ news. Note: Don’t worry - I won’t bore you with every EMC press release. After all, this is my personal blog ;) Anyway…this morning I got a press release about EMC’s acquisition of Berkeley Data Systems, the provider of Mozy Online Backup and Recovery. Although I haven’t used Mozy myself (yet) it looks like pretty good stuff. And according to this guy’s review, it even works on Vista x64 (something I appreciate more since my move to 64-bit). If you’re like me and have family/friends who occasionally ping you to rescue their lost data, you might want to point them to MozyHome. Heck, there’s even a free version that supports up to 2GB of data. Drop me a comment if you’ve used the service or know someone who has. I’ll try it out on one of my pro-bono clients and report back in a future post. Cheers! ...

Anything For Sale By Owner

As I alluded in a post a couple of weeks ago, I have been a bad blogger. And I have neglected my community of readers. However I would like to tell you what I have been doing in the last couple of months while I have been neglecting my blog. I recently got involved in creating a startup as the lead developer for an online classifieds site called Anything For Sale By Owner. From the ground up this was conceived as a middle-ground between craigslist and ebay where every listing would be charged at a static rate of $1.00/month. The $1.00 is a way to week out the crap from craigslist and the death-by-fees from ebay. ...

This made me laugh so hard that I just had to share it. You don’t really realize just how juvenile some people until you can see and hear it.

I have been a bad Blogger

Hi loyal readers, I have to apologize, I have been a really bad blogger lately. I have neglected my blog because of a new job and a brand new Web 2.0 site that I am about to release. At the end of the month I will make an announcement about this project and all the new technologies that many of you have probably heard of but few have implemented. But until then please keep visiting and I really enjoy your comments on the following popular postings: ...
